Pictures of iPhone 5 Prototype Leaked – Metal Back, Edge-to-Edge Display

According to a new report from the folks over at 9to5mac, a “reliable” source at Foxconn confirmed most iPhone 5 rumors heard so far, from materials used to build the device, to overall design. Overall, the iPhone 5 will keep the same form factor as the iPhone 4, and is thus expected to look similar to its predecessor. However, Apple engineers do not plan to use glass for the phone back cover, and will use metal instead, just like the original iPhone. Note that this new metal back is expected to be almost completely flat, and not curved, as previously reported. As for the screen that will come with the device, the Foxconn source confirmed the fact that the iPhone 5 will indeed come with an ‘edge-to-edge’ screen. This new design will allow Apple to offer a larger, 4-inch screen, without increasing the size of the phone.

The iPhone 5 is expected to be released before the summer, and will sport the new Apple A5 processor already featured in the iPad 2. Apple is currently giving final touches to its prototypes, and mass production should start soon. Foxconn, a Taiwan-based electronics company, assembles all iPhones, iPods and iPads on hehalf of Apple. The company is also used by Apple to build all of its prototypes, months before the final designs enter mass production. [Photo credit: 9to5mac]
