Apple Pushing Apps ‘Enhanced for iPad 2’ via iTunes

Since the launch of the iPad 2 on March 11, several iOS developers have released updated versions of their games, to take advantage of the tablet’s increased processing power, and new graphics engine. The first batch of enhanced games included Chair’s Infinity Blade, Firemint’s Real Racing 2 HD and Electronic Arts’ Dead Space, and since then, the list has grown steadily, with games such as Gameloft’s Asphalt 6. To help iPad 2 owners find these new enhanced apps more quickly, Apple just launched a specific iTunes section to showcase the apps that best leverage the new capabilities offered by the device. As of now, a little over ten apps are featured, including iMovie, GarageBand, Word Lens, Infinity Blade, IncrediBooth, Dead Space, Real Racing 2 HD, WebEx, Pocketbooth HD, Twitterlator, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD, and and last but not least, Evernote.

Note that the list is not exhaustive, and Apple will most likely keep adding more apps to the section as additional apps enhanced for the iPad 2 hit the App Store. Also worth noting, these enhancement have been made possible thanks to the brand new processor at the heart of the iPad 2, the Apple A5. The new chip – a screamer – offers two processing cores, 512 MB of LPDDR2 memory, and a new dual-core PowerVR graphics engine from Imagination Technologies, up to nine times faster than its predecessor. Several of the apps ‘Enhanced for iPad 2’ also leverage the device’s front and back cameras. For a full list, simply visit the new section on iTunes.
