➜ App description
222 million tons is a meal planning tool that provides collections of weekly menus and shopping lists. The menus use up all the perishables on the shopping lists. That means that, with one trip to the grocery store, you can get everything you’ll need for the week, and that you will waste less food, less time, less gas and less money.
To use the application for your planning, simply:
• Select the week plan you want to follow
• Select the number of people you will be cooking for
• Use the shopping list to do your shopping
• Prepare the recipes in the order shown
WHY 222 MILLION TONS?
According to a UN study published in 2011, 222 million tons of food are wasted in industrialized nations each year. Just to put that number in perspective: it's almost equivalent to the net food production in sub-Saharan Africa. It's huge.
The average consumer in Europe and North America throws away between 210 and 250 pounds of food each year. Of course, no one wants to waste food — but it's hard not to. It takes careful planning, and not everyone has time for that.
That's why we developed the '222 million tons' platform as a way to deliver one-week menus that allow single people, couples and small families to enjoy variety in their diets, without wasting fresh food.
BRIGHT AND BOLD
Our first recipe collection, Bright and Bold, was created with food lovers who care about the planet in mind — specifically for those who are single or have small families. The challenge in coming up with menus was to think of creative and varied ways to use up perishable ingredients that are sold in big quantities. If you’ve ever found yourself bored of munching on endless stalks of celery, or throwing some out and feeling bad about it, then this collection is for you.
Bright and Bold has four weeks worth of dinner recipes, designed deliver varied meals that are brimming with bright and bold colors, flavors and textures to your plate, while helping you reduce food waste.
All the recipes in the collection were tested, and we only kept the ones that were rated “exceptional.” Just take a look at the pictures if you want to know what we mean by exceptional.
