As expected, the Apple online store was updated at 1 AM Pacific Time this morning, to allow potential buyers to order the iPad 2 directly from Apple. All models are currently
available, and while the initial shipping lead times were 3-5 business days for all models, the iPad 2 inventories are quickly shrinking, as most models are now expected to ship in 5-7 business days (update: shipping lead times are currently over 2 weeks, see below).
Smart Covers are also available for order, in either
leather or
polyurethane. As of now, all color options show a shipping lead time of 1-2 business days.

Interestingly enough, the only model still showing a 3-5 business days shipping lead time is the black, 16GB Verizon-compatible iPad 2, which seems to imply that the model may not sell as well as the others.
Note that the iPad 2 will be available at 5PM today (local time), at all of the 236 Apple retail stores, as well as most Best Buy, Target, Walmart, at&t and Verizon stores.

UPDATE
Except the apparently not-so-popular black 16GB Verizon-compatible iPad 2, all other models are now showing shipping lead times of at least 2 weeks. In other words, the Apple online store is already out of stock.
