Heavy iPhone and iPad Users: Expect Slower 3G Download Speeds Soon

Bad news for heavy iPhone users on AT&T’s network: the telecom giant is about to roll out data speed throttling, in order to reduce the overall load on its 3G network. While this new policy should not affect users currently using capped data plans (250 MB or 2 GB, depending on your plan), it will directly impact the speed of the million of iPhone and iPad users who are still enjoying the now defunct unlimited data plan.

Here is how throttling will work: once you reach a specific threshold of data usage within a billing cycle, your speed will be automatically lowered in order to dramatically reduce the amount of data you can consume until your next billing cycle. While at this stage, the amount of data necessary to trigger the slower speed is unknown, only users who use more than 2 GB per billing cycle are expected to be impacted.

Play Flash Videos on your iPhone or iPad with Skyfire VideoQ

Skyfire, the company behind the flash-enabled Skyfire Web Browser, just released a new utility for the iPhone, the iPod touch and the iPad, designed to play flash videos on your device.

The app, called Skyfire VideoQ, works in two steps. First, simply send links to the flash videos you want to play by email (for instance, in Mobile Safari, all you need to do is to use the “Mail Link to this Page” button to email the webpages with the videos to Skyfire’s servers). From there, the videos get automatically converted to an iOS friendly format, and after a short while, the videos will be made available through the app.

Apple to Launch iPhone 5 in September, iPad 3 around Thanksgiving

According to a new report from Taiwan-based publication China Times, Apple is on track to launch the iPhone 5 sometime between September 6 and September 15. Apple’s manufacturing partners, including Foxconn, are currently building an initial run of about 400,000 units, and are expected to build 3.6 million more until the device launches.

While the new China Times report is in line with Digitimes when it comes to launch date, the two publications differ on the number of devices ready for launch, as Digitimes believes Apple is planning for as much as 15 million devices shipped in September. Nevertheless, it is now clear that the iPhone 5 will hit store shelves soon – so if you’re in the market for a new iPhone, refrain from buying it until then.
